Compulsory education for Japanese children consists of a total of 9 years: elementary school (6 years from ages 6 to 11) and junior high school (3 years from ages 12 to 14). Foreign resident children can also attend if they wish.
The school year in Japan starts in April.
Enrolling in a public school
If your household has an eligible child, you will receive a letter around the end of September of the year before the child’s enrollment asking whether or not your child will enroll in a public elementary or junior high school in Urayasu City.
If you respond “Yes, I wish to enroll my child in a public elementary or junior high school in Urayasu City,” you will receive a “notice of enrollment” (postcard) around the end of January of the year in which the child will enroll.
Please note that textbooks (books used for study), school lunches (meals provided by the school), and tuition will be free of charge (0 yen). However, you will be required to purchase and pay for the school supplies (such as uniforms and gym clothes).
Enrolling in a private school
After your child is admitted to a private school, please send the School Affairs Section the enrollment notice (postcard) and admission certificate issued from the private elementary or junior high school. You are responsible for paying fees for textbooks, tuition, school lunches, etc.
